It’s interesting where we get our inspiration sometimes. An 8:30am art history class is not an obvious choice, but in fact was source to one such epiphany this morning. As we discussed how impressionist art focused around feeling/meaning over visuals, we observed a piece entitled “White on White” (http://hankblog.files.wordpress.com/2008/11/00293033.jpg). What you probably see as a meaningless, unimpressive piece actually has more meaning than Leonardo’s Mona Lisa.
White on White is a complete destruction of the “clutter” that art was covered in. Art turned from visual eye-candy to intentional thought and idea. Art is now about feeling, not representation. Then we moved to how architecture’s reliance on exterior walls changed to interior pillars. Both revolve around theme that is very spiritual for me. The outward is no longer the basis. The inside reinforces the exterior. The dilemma is that the exterior is easily deceiving.
